AFA-CWA Lobby Day July 28, 2010, Washington D.C.
Last week nearly 50 flight attendants from AFA-CWA represented airlines participated in the July 28, 2010 day of lobbying on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. Flight attendant groups spent a full day visiting Senate and Congressional offices to urge support and passage of the FAA Reauthorization Bill, Bankruptcy and Pension reform to protect American workers and retirees, and legislation to prevent Aviation Job Outsourcing, (job loss due to Joint Ventures)
A team of flight attendant constituents from United, Alaska, Mesa, and Northwest/ Delta, visited offices of Senators Patty Murray-WA, Maria Cantwell-WA, and Washington representatives Jay Inslee-1st WA, Jim McDermott -7th-WA, and Dave Reichert-8th WA to name a few. Flight attendant’s personal stories and perspectives were shares regarding:
* the need for health and safety requirements, clean air quality standards, fatigue studies and provisions for flight attendants included in the FAA Reauthorization Bill
* the personal and economic impact of bankruptcy court decisions on our collective bargaining agreements
* the need to retain good jobs for American workers by regulating airline’s joint ventures as they attempt to outsource flight attendant jobs.
WASHINGTON STATE RACE FOR SENATE: “DINO IS COMING”. DINO ROSSI TO RUN AGAINST INCUMBENT PATTY MURRAY FOR US. SENATE
http://www.wslc.org/cope/rossi.htm
This fall’s election season promises to be contentious, with potential to unseat a number of elected officials who have worked closely with AFA-CWA and who support many issues important to airline employees. In Washington State Senator Patty Murray has worked hard to represent working families in the US Senate since 1992. In 2009 Senator Murray helped pass the Flight Crew Technical Corrections Act or FMLA for flight crew. Her work on behalf of flight attendants and working families was recognized at AFA-CWA’s Annual Board of Director’s meeting, April 29, 2010 in Las Vegas Nevada, where she was recognized with an honorary AFA-CWA membership. Senator Murray has received endorsements from many organizations, including Emily’s List, and received a substantial campaign contribution from FlightPAC. THANK YOU Seattle Flight Attendants of LEC 96!
Both Senator Murray and Cantwell’s offices noted the large number of letters that have been received by Washington State flight attendant constituents who signed letters to urge passage of the FAA Reauthorization Bill with flight attendant friendly provisions. Thanks to all who signed letters at the visibility tables for your participation in this very effective effort to bring attention to our issues. Phone calls, letters and emails are very effective tools to engage our elected officials and gain their attention and support.
Current Status of FAA Reauthorization Bill:
The FAA Reauthorization Bill has been extended an additional 60 days, until the end of September 2010. (The controversial Fed-EX issue is one provision that has kept the Bill from passing). Hopefully the Bill will be addressed and passed when Congress reconvenes in September.
Additionally, there are currently over 425 bills that have been passed in the House, and are currently sitting in the Senate. Nancy Pelosi, a guest speaker at the CWA Legislative convention addressed the lack of cooperation and difficulty passing legislation in the current congress.
